Deputy Director of External Relations – Communications

The Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN), a national nonprofit that serves military and veteran families, is hiring a detail-oriented professional to lead our communications and efforts. This role is focused on ensuring families and our partners are connected to MFAN, our mission, and our programs. Under our director of external relations, a successful candidate will bring a blend of experience in community relations, communications, digital media, and event planning.

Because this is an external-facing role, the deputy director of external relations – communications should have a knowledge of the military and veteran landscape (public and private sectors), and, most importantly, an authentic appreciation and commitment to understanding and responding to the needs of modern military families.

Responsibilities:

  • Advance the mission of MFAN through thoughtful storytelling and communications efforts that meet campaign goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with other internal teams to build awareness of strategic communications initiatives
  • Manage communications and outreach activities associated with the MFAN advisory board and ambassador program to further the reach and awareness of MFAN and MFAN programs to ensure grassroots communications efforts are effective, and that advisors are supported
  • Supervise a digital marketing manager and ensure successful execution of digital programs and campaigns, including online advertising, website strategy and design, and social media
  • Work with agency partner(s) to oversee the development and relaunch of a new MFAN website, including content creation and review
  • Represent MFAN in external meetings with a variety of stakeholders from the public and private sectors
  • Identify opportunities to partner with outside organizations that are highly intentional and elevate MFAN’s brand
  • Represent MFAN and yourself with care, polish, and authentic commitment to positive outcomes for military families

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in communications, marketing, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience supervising staff members and volunteers
  • Expert communications and storytelling skills
  • Experience in mobilizing influencers and grassroots communications
  • Ability to connect with stakeholders and the national and local level to meet strategic communications objectives
  • Proven experience in communications efforts around large scale events
  • Polish in all written and verbal communications including superior quality control and attention to detail
  • The ability to work with a variety of stakeholders to drive collaborative, meaningful impact
  • Strong presentation and communication skills
  • Experience with digital marketing tools and technologies, website and SEO performance measurement tools, and WordPress preferred
  • Prior agency experience or experience managing agencies and contractors highly preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to set and meet deadlines
  • Understanding and appreciation for military life and content that is important to military families

 

This is a remote full-time position with some travel. Candidates are expected to have a dedicated workspace, a computer, internet, and a cell phone. The Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN), a national nonprofit that serves military and veteran families, is hiring a skilled, agile, detail-oriented professional to manage our advisory board and local engagement efforts.

The advisory board is MFAN’s hallmark program, it convenes leaders and influencers in the military family community—from across the country—to discuss the challenges families are facing, and also make sure that military families are connected to the resources available. It was at the advisory board meetings that MFAN’s work on topics like military housing and food insecurity began. A successful candidate will be a blend of visionary, strategist, project manager, communicator, and doer. This role requires someone who is comfortable leading group discussions around complex topics, building consensus, problem-solving, and the innate ability to establish connections with those we serve. Under our director of programs, a successful candidate will bring a blend of experience in facilitation, community engagement, and volunteer management. This is a forward-facing role with growth potential.

We are looking for someone with a “can-do” attitude who has a balance of creativity, problem-solving skills, polish, and project management experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the MFAN advisory board, including meeting planning, interim communications efforts, and ensuring that participation in the advisory board is a valuable experience.
  • Support the planning of food distribution events by connecting with community-based organizations.
  • Work with the director of programs to develop an ambassador program that will further MFAN’s programmatic efforts in the following geographic locations: Fort Hood, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Fort Bragg, and Norfolk.
  • Supervise four local coordinators charged with supporting food distribution events at Fort Hood, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Fort Bragg, and Norfolk.
  • Serve as a conduit between the advisory board and external relations department to ensure that the advisory board is engaged with MFAN communications activities.
  • Represent MFAN in external meetings with a variety of stakeholders from the public and private sectors.
  • Identify opportunities to partner with outside organizations that are highly intentional and elevate MFAN’s brand.
  • Represent MFAN and yourself with care, polish, and authentic commitment to positive outcomes for military families.

Requirements:

A successful network engagement manager will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the areas listed above, be able to multi-task and manage multiple priorities, have superior attention to detail, and be polished in all forms of communication. Outreach Coordinator

The Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN), is hiring an experienced outreach coordinator for the following locations:  Ft. Hood (Texas), and Ft. Bragg (North Carolina). This boots-on-the-ground role will be responsible for working with our community partners to coordinate food distributions benefitting military families facing food insecurity.

Each programmatic effort is intentionally created in response to what we learn from our advisory board and through our research. MFAN is committed to measurable impact, and a successful candidate will have experience building, managing, and evaluating programmatic outcomes, and communicating to internal and external audiences.

The outreach coordinator will be responsible for acting as the point of contact for event logistics and community inquiries.  They will recruit and manage community volunteers to staff food distributions, in coordination with our food distribution partner. Demonstrated experience in event planning,

  • Act as MFAN liaison with a food distribution partner in the assigned region.
  • Represent MFAN in external meetings with a variety of stakeholders from the public and private sectors
  • Manage day-of logistics on-site at assigned food distribution events
  • Identify opportunities to partner with outside organizations that are highly intentional and elevate MFAN’s brand
  • Represent MFAN and yourself with care, polish, and authentic commitment to positive outcomes for military families

This is a 1099 contract position expected for a period of 6 months averaging 50 hours per month, with the possibility for extensions based on the needs of the organization.  Candidates are expected to have access to reliable transportation, a computer, internet, and a cell phone. MFAN is looking for an exceptional grant and proposal writer to join our growing team. In some cases, a grant proposal is the first introduction to our organization, so a successful candidate will be skilled at making that first impression count. This position requires excellent organizational skills and the ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment. This position will report directly to the director of external relations.

The grant and proposal writer will prepare grant proposals, beginning by performing research. The candidate must be highly organized with the ability to implement systems and follow-up processes, able to effectively work under pressure, use independent judgment and produce a professional work product that is competitive for grant funding within tightly managed time constraints that may sometimes require a quick response. Previous work experience will demonstrate a proven track record in securing new funding opportunities; comprehensive knowledge of research, and the ability to distinguish and identify funding opportunities for special programs.

  • Preparation of proposals and grant applications.
  • Grant reporting.

Requirements:

The Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN) is seeking a full-time, remote, digital marketing manager to join our team. 

The Manager of Digital Marketing handles all strategic online initiatives for an organization. Since this is a managerial-level position, this position spearheads initiatives from ideation, to creation, to execution. From there, a great Digital Marketing Manager monitors and analyzes metrics in order to adjust initiatives and campaigns accordingly and for the benefit of the organization. 

You’ll be responsible for developing, initiating, creating, and overseeing a long-term digital marketing campaign as well as spearheading sport-term advertising and marketing solutions. We’re looking for someone with experience in copywriting, art direction, and social media who can expand our brand’s reach locally while increasing brand loyalty and awareness. 

  • Develop and maintain a monthly content calendar for MFAN’s social properties, including publishing, using the social media scheduling application.  This includes drafting the posts and the emails for campaigns, and organic social 
  • Direct creation of graphics needed for social and web 
  • Execution of national digital programs and campaigns, including online advertising, website strategy, and design, social media, mobile, and deliverables.  These campaigns support the overall mission and fundraising strategies and goals 
  • Manage and moderate all social media properties and develop a plan to increase MFAN’s followers 
  • Social monitoring and listening; stimulate dialogue and communication with all audiences 
  • Collaborate with other internal teams (e.g. research and programs) to monitor strategic communications initiatives 
  • Analyze and report on the performance and efficiency of digital campaigns 
  • Identify and evaluate new digital technologies and use web analytics tools to measure site traffic to better optimize marketing campaigns, email marketing, social media, and display and search advertising 

 Requirements:  

  • Understanding and appreciation for military life and content that is important to military families  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing or related field required 
  • 3 years progressive experience in digital communications   
  • Superior quality control and attention to detail 
  • Excellent grasp of social media and website metrics and best practices   
  • Strong knowledge of various marketing and web analytics tools, including Constant Contact, Blackbaud products, Google Analytics, Sprout Social (or other social scheduling/listening software) 
  • Ability to write and present content that appeals to multiple audiences including military families, stakeholders, funders, media, and more
  • Demonstrated success in digital marketing and advertising 
  • Superior writing skills 
  • Experience with website and SEO performance measurement tools 
  • Ability to create and optimize graphics for social 
  • Demonstrated experience with WordPress and HTML preferred
